Newcastle Community Growing Scheme – Phase 2
Grow Your Own Food • Eat Healthier • Reduce Food Costs

Community Garden

Community Garden

With the rising cost of living and food prices putting pressure on household budgets, growing some of your own food can be a rewarding way to enjoy fresh produce while helping to reduce some of your grocery costs.

The Newcastle Community Growing Scheme – Phase 2 provides an affordable and accessible opportunity to grow your own food. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced grower, you can start with your own growing bed and enjoy growing food for yourself.

🌱 Your Own Growing Bed

Each participant can use a 122cm × 122cm × 18cm growing bed for vegetables, herbs, fruit or other suitable plants.

The site receives plenty of sunshine during the summer and is particularly suitable for growing mangetout, cucumbers, pumpkins, strawberries, fennel, tomatoes, onions, garlic, mint, potatoes and much more.

Growing your own gives you freshly harvested food and a better understanding of how your food is produced. Making good use of even a small growing bed can also help offset some of the cost of buying fresh vegetables and herbs.

🌳 More Than Just a Growing Bed

Participants can also use the NEHK Community Garden free of charge.

The garden can be booked for leisure and private activities, including BBQs, gatherings with friends, family get-togethers and small private events. It gives you the opportunity not only to grow food, but also to enjoy an outdoor green space with family and friends.

Use of the Community Garden is subject to availability, the booking policy and applicable garden rules.

💚 Participation Fees

NEHK Members: First growing bed FREE; each additional growing bed £5 per year.

Non-members: First growing bed £16 per year; each additional growing bed £8 per year.

💧 Maintaining Your Growing Bed

During the summer, participants are expected to visit at least once every three weeks to maintain their growing bed, including weeding, watering and general upkeep.

If you're busy, away or simply don't have time to weed and water your growing bed, we can help for just £2 per month.

Compost and seeds must be purchased separately. All participants must also follow the garden rules and Community Growing Scheme guidelines.
